Safe School Plan

 

Willard Middle School Internet Safe School Plan

 The Willlard Middle School "Safe School Plan" is a community project.

The committee meets once a month and is made up of students, parents, teachers and administrators - everyone who is interested is welcome to attend. The meetings are expected to last no more than one hour and will always follow an agenda. The attending body will review the California Education Code, Board Policy, Local Berkeley Laws and past school practices to determine the best policy or procedure regarding a school issue. After review of the codes, the body will agree by a majority vote and a proposal will be submitted to the Principal to include in our plan.

After the Principal's approval, the policy is published and posted to this web page.

  • Assessing the current status of school crime
  • Identifying safe school strategies and programs
  • Addressing the school's procedures for complying with existing laws relating to school safety, which shall include the development of all the following
  • Converting all policies and procedures that were approved by committee and by School Site Council to The Willard Middle School Comprehensive Safe School Plan (this document is for official use only - please reference this plan if contents are borrowed).

Goals for the 2006-2007 Safe School Committee are:

  • Improve/Revise the Critical Intervention Plan/Team
  • Research plan for SIM's compliance measures and adopt those measures in our disaster preparedness plans
  • Adopt, trian and implement "Positive Behavior Support" strategies throughout the school community
  • Revise appendicees of the Willard Safe School Plan

 

Section 1. Child abuse reporting procedures consistent with Penal Code section 11164 et seq.

All employees of Willard Middle School are committed to the children. All employees are mandated to report all abuse and neglect cases to the Alameda County Child Abuse Prevention Council - Child Protective Services. There is no choice. It is the law. This duty to report is also written on the back of the teacher and administrator credetials.

This plan is not posted. Drawings and other egress/ingress startegies will be included when finalized. All procedures are posted in all spaces for students and staff. Ingress procedures may be too sensitive for posting. This matter will be discussed at one of this years (2004/2005) meetings.

Background

 

Who is responsible for the Safe School Plan and why do we have a Safe School Plan?

At the end of the 1997 legislative session, the California Legislature enacted Senate Bill 187 (Chapter 736, Hughes, Comprehensive School Safety Plans. SB 187 makes school districts and county offices of education (COE) responsible for the development of "comprehensive school safety plans" in each of the schools for which the district or COE is responsible.

What is the process in developing the Safe School Plan?

The school-site council is responsible for the development of the plan, and may delegate the responsibility to a committee with specified members (Education Code section 35294.1(b)). This delegation of authority was granted by the School Site Council in February of 2004.

Although this has not been specifically addresses in the school site plan, the principal has delegated the authority for a committee to be formed that represents the students, parents, teachers and administration.

  • The committee will meet at least once a month ­ 1 hour.
  • The committee will review proposals and make a final recommendation to the principal.
  • The principal will approve the policy or recommend a change to the committee.
    Final action will be posted to the web page along with the education plan so that all school committee members are aware of changes to school rules.
